NORDEN A Guide to Scandinavian Genealogical Research in a Digital World by Art Jura. Perfect bound, 128 pp, several illustrations. 2003
Here ia a guidebook that not only delves deeply into traditional Scandinavian history and genealogy, but also has been expanded to include ALL of the Nordic nations, peoples, and autonomous regions. These include Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Norway, Iceland, Greenland, The Faroe Islands, Aland, and the Lappish peoples of Sapmi.
Among the numerous topics included for each group are the causes and dates of emigration, locations and census figures, evolution of surnames, farm names, soldiers' names, trade names, and the ethnic minorities within each nation. Each chapter also contains the location of important Internet websites, which allow the reader to do his own genealogical research for that particular nation. A complete Nordic Website List can be found at the end of the book. Also included is a Nordic Word List that translates over 100 genealogically useful words into Swedish, Finnish, Danish, Norwegian, and Icelandic, and an explanation of the alphabet used in each language.
The last chapter is the most unique, as it deals with the ealiest inhabitants of the northernmost area of Norden, the Sami. Very little has ever been published in America about these indigenous people, but their families were migrating to America as early as 1865, and they were identified only as Norwegians, Finns, or Swedes.
This is the first book to be published about all of the Nordic nations and people, along with illustrations and addresses of nearly a hundred pertinent Internet websites.
