(SOUTH BERWICK). A COUNTRY DOCTOR. By Sarah Orne Jewett. 371 pp. New Foreword with photos of Jewett, her father and their house; dj. 1984 (1884). # 1261 This largely autobiographical tale set in South Berwick, Maine was the first novel written by Sarah Orne Jewett. A loving portrait of her father Dr. Theodore Herman Jewett; it is also a plea for a woman's right to pursue a career. Set in the South Berwick of her day, its characters closely resemble her friends and acquaintances. Like all of her work, A Country Doctor illustrates Sarah Orne Jewett's often stated objective: to interpret her piece of New England to the rest of the world, to show the resourcefulness, the wry humor, the simple goodness of her Maine people. So well did she succeed that she has been ranked with Emily Dickinson as America's two principal women writers. We hope you will enjoy this quality reprint of A Country Doctor.

HINGHAM, Mass., History of the town of: The Genealogies. By George Lincoln. 927 pp. Indexs of Surnames, Places, Misc. Items; dj. 1987 (1893). #1231 The History of the Town of Hingham, Massachusetts was originally published in 1893 in four parts. Our reprint combines the last two parts into a single volume; the genealogies of Hingham's families from the town's settlement in 1635 through 1889, with George Lincoln as author. The first two parts of the original (not included here, but soon to be reprinted by Picton Press) comprised the narrative history of the town and were the work of a committee of leading townspeople.

The genealogies included here cover over 35,000 names and 600 families! Lincoln's work is arranged alphabetically, but in addition there are three complete indexes which make it easy to find all references to the families you are researching. The genealogical research is done in the Register format and in a competent and interesting manner. We recommend the book to all researchers working in or near Hingham.

PARIS, Maine: The Second Hundred Years 1893-1993. Pub jointly with The Paris Cape Historical Society of South Paris, Maine. 1,216 pp. 65 photos & illus, index. 1994.

Lapham's classic History of Paris, Maine, published in 1884 and reprinted by us, is now Out of Print. This new history begins where Lapham and Maxim left off, and brings the history of the town of Paris up to the present time. Included are sections on vital records since 1901 - often extremely difficult if not impossible to obtain, listings of veterans from the Revolution through the Vietnam War, and an extensive index. The Historical Society also included sections from Lapham's earlier work in cases where data has since surfaced, adding considerably to what was known in earlier times. Thus, even if you have the 1893 book, you will want to check this book for corrections and added information.

(UNION) A HISTORY OF THE TOWN OF UNION, in the county of Lincoln, Maine, to the middle of the nineteenth century; with a Family Register of the settlers before the year 1800, and of their descendants. By John Langdon Sibley. 560 pp. Frontispiece, index, new Foreword by A. Carmen Clark. 1987 (1851). ISBN 0-89725-065-6.

Siley's History of Union has long taken its just place as one of the better, and earlier, town histories in Maine. Growing up in a community which had been settled only 28 years before his birth, John Sibley had extensive first hand knowledge of Union's history, knowledge which helped immeasureably in writing this thoroughly readable, and accurate history.
