The region encompassing what is now known as Rockingham County in the commonwealth of Virginia was originally settled as early as 1727. Prior to 1738 the entire Shenandoah Valley was part of Orange County. In 1738 two additional counties were formed from Orange County and called Frederick County and Augusta County. In 1777 a large part of Augusta County was formed into the present-day Rockingham County.
Research in Rockingham County can be difficult since many of the official records have been lost to fires. This makes the existing church records important as a source of early genealogical information. The records in this book, written in German script, have never before been translated and published and have been inaccessible to most researchers. Now, due to the diligence and exacting work by Brigitte Burkett, these records have been translated and are now readily available to all researchers.
Also included in this book along with the church records is the Rockingham County Personal Property Tax List for 1801.
