RETURN OF MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT OF ENGLAND, 1213-1702. Compiled by the Public Record Office, London, 2 volumes in 1, 609pp. in Part I, 489 pages in Part II which is the Index to Part I. 20,000+ entry Every Name Index. 2002 (1989, 1878/1888). CD-ROM.
This massive compendium of all members of the Parliaments of England for five centuries took the Public Record Office in London several decades to compile. The CD includes the names of all of those who served, the dates of the Parliament to which they were called, and the locality in England from which they served. Thus this book offers genealogists a quick check of the names and residences of almost all English families which rose to any position of prominence during the nearly 500 years covered! The original volume was published in 1878 and contained a total of 609 over-sized pages of fine print. The index volume then took another ten years to compile, and was published in 1888 with 489 similarly over-sized pages of fine print. There are well over 20,000 entries in the index.
Parliaments of England offers researchers quick access to information as to the regions where specific surnames within the gentry were found, and information on many of the more prominent individuals within those families and regions. Thus it offers an interesting and very useful starting point for research into England’s Middle Ages, giving data to be found nowhere else.
Few American researchers have seen or worked with this book. Additionally, the original volumes were printed on high acid paper which is extremely brittle today, and in addition were soft cover! This reprint combines both volumes into one and utilizes the modern technology of CD-ROMs. All that is required is for the researcher to have a computer with Windows 95 or later.
