Description:
St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church of West Camp, New York Volume 1:
1708-1843, CD-ROM. Introduction by Henry Z Jones, Jr. 186 pages, images of original records in
Adobe Acrobat PDF format. Transcription by Pastor Frederick Weiser. Includes baptisms, marriages, deaths, members, confirmations,
communicants, and contributions.
These records were begun in 1708 by Pastor Joshua Kocherthal, born “Joshua Harrsch”. He
served as first pastor to the German Lutherans who had settled in colonial New York after
arriving initially in 1708. His church was first at today’s Newburgh and later at West Camp on
the Hudson River.
That this churchbook survived, is a miracle unto itself. Supposedly this little volume
was rescued from a fire at the last minute by cleaning ladies who were burning old unwanted
materials found in the church office. However this happened, we are blessed to have an extant
record of many Lutheran families who were part of the great exodus from Germany to New York
in 1708 and 1709.
