Elijah Baldwin Huntington (1816-1817) was a Yale graduate, Congregational minister and successful teacher. Beginning in 1848, Stamford's Town Clerk Edwin Scofield, Jr. brought together and bound all of Stamford's Town Meeting, Land and Probate Records. After earlier working on a history of Norwich, Conn., Rev. Huntington moved to Stamford in 1854 and by 1856 was busy examining the Stamford Town Records, which had thus already been brought together by Scofield. In 181863 Rev. Huntington published his definitive A Genealogical Memoir of the Huntington Family in this Country.
Following his publication of History of Stamford in 1868, Rev. Huntington published Stamford Registration of Births, Marriages and Deaths in 1874. Thus, during the period in which Rev. Huntington researched and wrote this definite history of Stamford and Darien, Connecticut, he had access to all of the town and vital records of the immediate area.
The dept of Rev. Huntington's knowledge of the area is evident throughout this book. Included are copies of all births, marriages and deaths to 1700; a map of the town in 1685; lists of the original settlers of 1641; together with details on the "new" families arriving between 1660 and 1775. There are lengthy accounts of the American Revolution and the War of 1812 which, together with a 75-page biographical section, give a detailed account of the activities of almost every family ever resident in the town.
As Darien formed a part of Stamford until 1820, researchers interested in Darien will also want this book.
