The town of Union is located in Knox County, thirteen miles northwest of Rockland, the county seat. According to John Langdon Sibley's A History of the Town of Union, Maine the first people to settle in the town came in September or October of 1772. The land was later purchased by John Taylor, of Lunenburg, Mass., from Thomas and Hannah Flucker, Isaac Winslow and Francis Waldo by deed dated 30 September 1774. In 1776 Philip Robbins along with several others moved into what was then known as Stirlington and on 1 August 1777 Robbins bought about 4,000 acres of land in Stirlington from John Taylor for the sum of 1,200 pounds. The town was organized as the plantation of Stirlington in 1786 and then incorporated 20 October 1786 as the town of Union. In 1811 a portion of the town was split off to form the town of Washington.
