Kennebec County encompasses an area of nearly a half million acres and is located in the south-central portion of the state of Maine. The county was incorporated on 20 February 1799 as the sixth county. At that time it was much larger than it currently is and included all of Somerset county. When Somerset County was incorporated as a separate county in 1809, it took four-fifths of the land in Kennebec County. Later, several towns were set off to Waldo County, Franklin County, and Androscoggin County, further reducing the original size of the county. The county now contains twenty-five towns, four cities and one organized plantation with Augusta being the county seat.
