Description:
Androscoggin County was formed from parts of Cumberland, Oxford, Kennebec and Lincoln Counties and was incorporated 18 March 1854. The county now contains the cities of Auburn and Lewiston and the towns of Durham, Greene, Leeds, Lisbon, Livermore, Livermore Falls, Mechanic Falls, Minot, Poland, Turner, Wales and Webster.
In 1828 Maine enacted a law requiring all ministers and Justices of the Peace to submit records of the marriages they performed to the town clerk of the town in which the marriage occurred. The town clerk then sent a certified copy of the marriages to the clerk of the Judicial Court of their respective county. A change in the law in 1892 eliminated the necessity of the records going to the county. They were sent directly the State. These county records are all that exist for some towns that lost their original records by fire, destruction or disappearance.
Androscoggin County marriage returns for the years 1827-1881 are contained in one volume and are located in the Maine State Archives. In this CD-Rom series, Picton Press brings you the original images of all these marriage returns, with approximately 472 original pages.
