Lisbon, Androscoggin County, was incorporated in 1799 and during the early decades of the 19th century enjoyed a boom in population as the sawmill industry expanded. In 1810 the population was 450; the 1820 population was 2,240; but by 1840 it had fallen back to 1,100, as the woods were thinned out and lumbermen moved on elsewhere in Maine.
Marlene Groves has meticulously and exactly transcribed all of these vital records, retaining the all-important original family arrangement, and adding Picton Press' usual Every Name Index. She even located some original records at the town office which were believed lost until now. The impressive total of over sixteen thousand index entries reflects the fact that many marriages which occurred in Lisbon were for non-residents.
