"A comprehensive treatment of an interesting town" - The New England Historical and Genealogical Register.
"A library space-saving book of great value to the resident descendants of Belfast and certainly a volume for every library Down East" - Connee Jellison, Family Ties.
"Readers will find much of interest here" - Detroit Society for Genealogical Research Magazine.
Belfast, the county seat of Waldo County, Maine, has been the center of commercial activity since Waldo County's formation in 1827. With a varied and interesting history dating back to the American Revolution, Belfast has had the good fortune to have had five major chroniclers of its history. Two of the four histories listed above, Locke and Crosby, were published only in newspaper columns in the last century; the other two, Abbot and White, are exceedingly scarce in book form. The fifth history, by Williamson, was reprinted several years ago in two volumes and is not included here.
Picton Press now brings you all four of these rare and early Belfast town histories, transcribed by Elizabeth M. Mosher, in a single volume. In addition an Every-Name index with just over 5,000 entries has been added, which will bring all of this data to your fingertips.
In a new and insightful Introduction to Crosby and Locke written especially for this edition, Alan S. Taylor of the Department of History, University of Boston examines the development of Belfast and surrounding area, as well as the careers of these two diarists. Picton Press has also added a brief Preface to Abbot and Williams.
