“Many nuggets for social, intellectual, and economic historians and for those interested in the history of the family” - The Virginia Magazine of History and Biography.
"Engagingly written narrative." - The Virginia Magazine of History and Biography
From its arrival in the 1650s, the Custis family has played a prominent part in Virginia’s affairs. The family is best known for its connection with George Washington. Martha Dandridge as a 19-year old girl married 29-year old Daniel Parke Custis soon after the death of Daniel’s father John Custis had elevated Daniel to being one of the wealthier men in Virginia.
Daniel Parke Custis died fairly soon, leaving Martha a 37-year old widow with two young children and all of the Custis money. George Washington soon secured the widow, her wealth, and later the country's heart. The rest, as they say, is history.
Much of this volume concerns the descendants of Daniel Parke Custis and their relationship with the person and persona of George Washington. Their lives, trials, and tribulations remind us that the ill effects of too much fame and fortune are not a modern phenomenon.
You will learn of the Custis connection with Robert E. Lee, Arlington, and much else. An interesting story, well told, which we recommend highly.
