Description:
Picton Press is pleased to bring you the original images of Craven County, North Carolina wills and deeds from 1708 through 1970 on a collection of 28 CDs. At the same time we are bringing you the original images of early North Carolina wills 1663-1790 on 9 CDs, plus a valuable group of various tax lists 1720-1839 for fifteen of North Carolina’s early counties on a single CD, and miscellaneous records from Albemarle County 1678-1737, also on a single CD. These 39 CDs offer you an immense amount of original early data; we hope that you find them useful.
Most of the original records included on these CDs are no longer available for public consultation. Only microfilm copies, and now these digital CD copies, are available for research.
Those who are particularly interested in Craven County will want to consult The 1710 Swiss and German Settlers of New Bern, North Carolina by Lewis Bunker Rohrbach, CG. This 755 page book was published by Picton Press in 2002 as the second volume in the three-volume set Even More Palatine Families by Henry Z Jones Jr., FASG and Lewis Bunker Rohrbach, CG. It contains a comprehensive account of the 752 Swiss and German settlers who set out in 1710 to found Christoph von Graffernried’s settlement of New Bern, Craven County, North Carolina. These Swiss and German pioneers made up a significant portion of Craven County’s early population, and as their descendants have now spread out across North Carolina there are a multitude of North Carolinians today who have ancestry in New Bern.
For researchers working on early Craven County records, it should be mentioned that a verbatim transcription of the earliest Craven County lists 1713-1769 covering taxpayers, settlers, etc. is included in
the Appendix to The 1710 Swiss and German Settlers of New Bern, North Carolina. This will give you a
good way to check your own transcriptions of these original images.
The North Carolina State Archives [www.ah.dcr.state.nc.us/archives] and the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources which includes the North Carolina State Library [http://statelibrary.dcr.state. nc.us] together offer an immense amount of genealogical and historical material on North Carolina. Much of their information is available on microfilm, while some of it must be consulted in person in Raleigh. The bulk of the earliest original records are now restricted from public access and can be seen only on microfilm. If there is sufficient interest, Picton Press will make additional North Carolina records available on CD-Rom.
This CD includes Craven County, North Carolina Loose Wills 1760-1890 from Volumes H-Z with approximately 572 original pages. File is in Adobe Acrobat PDF format.
