Hampden, Penobscot County, was incorporated February 24, 1794. Many of the surnames in these records are those of the settlers of Hampden and outlying towns and include: in Hampden, Gen. John Crosby, Hon. Martin Kinsley, Gen. Jedidiah Herrick, Enoch Brown, and John Godfrey; in Hermon James Patten, John Kimball Rufus Robinson; in Newburg Freeman Luce, Edward Snow, Levi Mudgett, James Morrison, Abel Hardy, Thomas Morrill, Ezekiel Smith, George Bickford, and Daniel Piper; in Bucksport, David Marsh (originally grantee), Col. Jonathan Buck, James and William Duncan, Richard Emerson, William Chamberlain (all from Haverhill Mass.); Asahel Harriman, Jonathan Frey, Benjamin Page, Phineas Ames, Samuuel M. Pond, and Henry Darling.
Hampden was an important civic center in the late 18th and early 19th century when much of the surrounding area was sparsely settled and lacked incorporated towns where the people could register their lifetime events. Thus they turned to Hampden for their registrations, particularly from the outlying plantation lands and communities such as Bucksport, Frankfort, Winterport, and Orrington.
