Description:
The town of Fort Fairfield is located in Aroostook County, Maine and is forty-six miles north of Houlton. The town has been called variously: Township D Ranges 1 and 2; Plymouth Grant; Sarsfield Plantation; and Maple Grove. On March 11, 1858 Fort Fairfield was incorporated as the 401st town in Maine. At that time the town included only the area known as Letter D, lying mostly south of the Aroostook River. Sarsfield or Plymouth Grant was annexed to Fort Fairfield on February 12, 1867. The first settlements were made in about 1816, the settlers being mostly lumbermen from New Brunswick, Canada.
Linda Zapatka has transcribed verbatim all of the records contained in all five surviving early town clerk's record books. The first book, although missing from the town office, still exists on microfilm although some pages were accidentally omitted during the filming of this first book. However, from the index found on the microfilm, the names of the brides and grooms have been reconstructed for these missing pages, even though the exact dates of marriage are unknown. Because Fort Fairfield is so close to the New Brunswick border, many couples came across the border to be married or to record their intentions. This book will thus be important not only for researchers of Maine families but for New Brunswick families as well.
