Bucksport, Hancock County, was incorporated June 25, 1792. It was first settled in the spring of 1764 by Jonathan Buck and others from Massachusetts and originally called Plantation No. 1. The plantation was burned in June 1779 when the colonial naval fleet suffered its worst defeat at the hands of the British during the American Revolution. Many families fled to Massachusetts with only those families willing to swear allegiance to the Crown being permitted to remain. After the war the town was rebuiltand settlers began to return in 1784. At the time of the 1790 census there were 62 families, or 138 individuals, residing at Plantation No. 1.
