Canaan, Maine is a small town in Somerset County, about eight miles east of Skowhegan. Settled in 1770, it was incorporated June 18, 1788 as the 57th town. At that time, Canaan included all of what is now Skowhegan. Parts of Canaan were set off to form Bloomfield and Milburn in 1823; Bloomfield and Milburn combined to form Skowhegan in 1836. Thus, many of the early town records include families who are important in the history of Skowhegan as well as the history of Canaan.
