Description:
The Chorgerichtsmanuale contain the earliest records of the church disciplinary council of Kirchgemeinde Erlenbach im Simmental which is located up in the Berner Oberland, and as such are a unique source for both genealogists and historians. The Chorgericht handled all forms of social misbehaviour in the area, ranging from verbal disputes between neighbors, through non-attendance in church, up to instances of illegitimacy. In the latter case, the Chorgerichtsmanuale are often literally the only way to determine the identity of fathers of illegitimate children born in the Kirchgemeinde. Decisions of the Chorgericht had the force of law and greatly determined the course of life in the Kirchgemeinde. All records here are images of the original pages (which have never been microfilmed or published) and thus researchers need to be able to read the old German. The church books of Erlenbach im Simmental begin in 1690 while these Chorgerichtsmanuale begin in 1614, making them an even more unique source of data! This is a very limited edition and a unique opportunity for your library.
