Kittery, York County, Maine was settled in the 1630s and incorporated in 1647 as Piscataqua Plantation, the first town in Maine. Its vital records surely rank as among the most important in all of New England, yet until now they had never been published. Worse yet, the present whereabouts of the four large volumes which contained all of the vital records 1656-1891 are not known, and the books are presumed to be lost.
Picton Press and the Maine Genealogical Society have teamed up, once again; this time bringing you all of the vital records of Kittery from 1656 through 1891, a period of 236 years! Joseph Anderson and Lois Thurston, editors and transcribers of these records, have done the meticulous and difficult job of working with the extant microfilm copies (some 900 pages spread over the four volumes) to render a complete, verbatim, account, of all births, marriage inten tions, marriages, deaths, and family records. Picton Press has added its usual Every-Name Index; the size of which, 27,740 entries in all, give you an indication of the magnitude of the job which the editors have done. This is destined to be called one of the classic vital records books every published!
