Description:
(DEDHAM) THE DIARY OF DR. NATHANIEL AMES of Dedham, Massachusetts 1758-1822. Ed. By Robert Brand Hanson, 1472pp., 2 vols., subject and name index. 1998. Smythe sewn and hard cover. 2 vol. Set
Dr. Nathaniel Ames began his diary when he was a sixteen-year old Harvard freshman and maintained his diary for the following sixty-four years, the final entry being made by a weary but still feisty old man, only fifteen days before he died.
Once the Dedham Historical Society had a copy of this diary, they quickly realized they had a treasure in their hands. In January of 1890 they began publishing the diary in their quarterly magazine The Dedham Historical Register. In the next thirteen years they got only so far as Diary year 1807 and probably included less than a third of the total manuscript text for the years that were covered. Picton Press now makes this important research tool available to genealogists and historians in its entirety.
