Northampton County, Virginia has the oldest continuous county records in the United States. During the Confederacy, all County Clerks were directed to deposit their records in Richmond. Northampton County neglected to do so, thus its records remained in Eastville when Richmond went up in flames, along with most other county records. Volume 1 (1632-1640) and Volume 2 (1640-1645) were published some years ago and are now out of print. These important volumes, Volume 3 (1645-1651) and Volume 5 (1654-1655), contain innumerable data regarding lawsuits between individuals, wills filed with the county, estate appraisals and occasional deeds of gift. The importance of these volumes to genealogists and historians is enormous. These are among the oldest records of America's earliest states and as such deserve a place in the libraries of all Virginia's genealogists.
