Sudbury is one of the northernmost towns in Rutland County, Vermont and was first chartered at an early date, 6 Aug. 1763. After being contested, a second charter was granted 22 June 1764. The earliest records of the Congregational Church in Sudbury show a membership on 8 Dec. 1791. Many of the families which settled in Sudbury were headed by men who had served in the Revolutionary War.
Mary Anne Z. Wheeler has compiled a wealth of information about descendants of the early settlers, carrying all families down to the Civil War period and families which remained in town carried further to about 1900. Data for the genealogical section was drawn from the vital records of the town along with other area records. In addition to the genealogies, she has transcribed the first book of vital records which includes births to 1835 and marriages to 1860. She has also extracted data from the Congregational Church records of Sudbury between 1791 and 1884, as well as cemetery death records of the town and census records from 1791 through 1850.
