The city of Rockland is the shire town for Knox County and was first incorporated in 1848 as East Thomaston after being split off from the town of Thomaston. In 1850 the name was changed to Rockland.Although these records start at a later date than many town records, the volume of records due to the population size more than makes up any difference.
Many of the family records even contain birth data prior to the town’s incorporation. A separate book for death records began as early as 1852 and marriage intentions and marriage records begin in 1848. Also added are extractions of “corrected records” taken from five Books of Correction located in the clerk’s office. Most of these corrected records in the form of depositions filed in later years give additional data not found in the original record, such as, birth place for parents, occupations, plus the relationship of the deponent.“Delayed returns” are also included which also give additional data for individuals not found in the original record.
Knox County has not had the advantage of seeing many of its town vital records in print. We are grateful to Marlene Groves for tackling this mammoth project and look forward to seeing more projects of a similar nature in the future.
